Tsum Valley: A Sacred Himalayan Gem
Tsum Valley, located in northern Gorkha District, is a sacred Himalayan valley whose name derives from the Tibetan word “Tsombo,” meaning “vivid colors.” The valley’s colorful geological features and dramatic landscapes make it visually stunning. Known in full as “Tsum Tso Chucksums,” meaning “thirteen provinces ruled as one,” this region is surrounded by the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges, providing spectacular views throughout the trek.
This peaceful valley is a treasure trove of ancient art, culture, and religion. It is adorned with hundreds of ancient Buddhist Mani walls and stupas and is home to significant monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, DephuDoma Nunnery Gompa, and Millarepa Gompa. The trails are lined with intricately carved Mani stones, showcasing the region’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage.
Unique Culture and Traditions
The local people of Tsum Valley and Manaslu are predominantly of Tibetan origin, speaking their own dialect and practicing unique traditions, including polyandry. Their festivals, such as Lhosar, Dhacyhang, and Saka Dawa, are lively celebrations of their rich cultural heritage.
Trekking Journey
The trek begins at Machhakhola, accessible via a 7–8-hour drive by bus or private vehicle from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Following the Budhi Gandaki River Valley, the trail passes through picturesque Chhetri, Brahmin, and Gurung villages and their steeply terraced farmlands.
During the first three days, trekkers trekked through the narrow valley carved by the Budhi Gandaki River. The landscape gradually opens up after reaching Jagat, offering spectacular views of Sringi Himal from Salleri. From Nyak Phedi, the trail goes northeast, entering the Siyar River Valley and marking the start of the Tsum Valley trek. The journey continues to Mu Gompa, one of the region’s most prominent monasteries.
Encircled by Boudha Himal, Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Sringi Himal, Tsum Valley offers awe-inspiring views and a profound sense of serenity. The return route reconnects with the main Manaslu Larke Pass trail at Nyak Phedi.
