Chitlang Valley: A Historical Gem
Chitlang is an ancient Newari settlement nestled in the northern part of Makawanpur district, approximately 25 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu. The breathtaking Chitlang valley, situated at an altitude of 1835 meters above sea level, holds significant historical and archaeological importance. According to an inscription left by King Angshubarma at Tokhel, the king granted the land to shepherds and established settlements for them at Tokhel, Nulgaun, Kunchal, and other places. Some historians believe these people were called Gopal and belonged to the Gopal dynasty. In present days, they are called Gopali.
A Tapestry of Cultures
The Chitlang Valley is primarily inhabited by Newar, Tamang, Khas, and Thakuri peoples. It has been known by various names, including Chitrapur, Shudhapur, Kolapur, Hastinapur, and Champur. This region is a captivating destination for visitors, offering a rich blend of culture, nature, tradition, and geography. Beyond the majestic Himalayas that adorn the northern part of Nepal, Chitlang valley’s unique and picturesque old villages, stunning landscapes, traditional agriculture, lively village life, and rich culture are its main tourist attractions.
Natural Wonders and Historical Sites
The Chitlang-Daman Tour also encompasses the magnificent Kulekhani Dam (also known as Indrasarobar Lake) and the cascading Mohini Jharna (waterfall). Kulekhani Dam, the largest man-made lake in Nepal, is located in the northern part of Makawanpur district, just south of Chitlang. Despite being artificial, Indrasarobar is undeniably beautiful, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
Daman: A Hilltop Retreat
Daman, a charming hill station around 80 kilometers west of Kathmandu, is accessible via the old Tribhuvan Highway. Known for its winter snowfalls and colorful rhododendron blooms in spring, Daman attracts both domestic and international tourists. From its vantage point, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal Himal, and Gaurishankar mountain ranges on clear days.
