My wife and I went to Nepal ten years ago for what we thought would be a once in a lifetime trip. Then we met Ambar. He made the trip so much more than we could have expected that we have returned four times and are soon going back for the fifth. Ambar, his wife Krishna, and son Phurba have become like family to us.
Ambar excels at the details, and strives to make things as comfortable as he can. He is always subtly watching. Watching your pace, what you are eating (perhaps the “yak” is not your best choice, Dave), how you are looking and feeling. In the four trips we have never had a bad day. Even sliding around in a surprise rain storm turned out to be just plain fun. I haven’t got a clue how he did that one, but we actually did have a good time.
He also excels at laughing. I don’t think we ever had an hour without some reason to smile, if for no other reason than just seeing the joy he exudes. His English skills are excellent. If you come with an open mind and lots of questions, you will learn so much more than a “tourist”. He grew up in the mountains and knows the culture. Don’t miss the opportunity to see what Nepal has to offer and to do it with a great guide and someone who will become a good friend. For those of you who care about these things (and I do) you should know that 100% of your money ends up in Nepal, not siphoned off into the coffers of Western tour operators. You will get a better trip and do more for the Nepalese economy. It’s a win-win.
