Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m) is the seventh highest peak in the world. The Dhaulagiri Expedition is a 7-week, long, technically challenging 8000-meter climb in the Himalayas. Due to this reason, it usually only attracts seasoned climbers, which means that there are not many commercial treks here.Mt. Dhaulagiri can be easily recognized due to its unique round shape that can be seen from treks when leaving for Pokhara. Its first successful expedition was in 1960 by the Swiss from the Northeast ridge.
The expedition starts as trekkers land in Kathmandu, where all the official formalities and documentation will be completed. From Kathmandu fly to Pokhara and from there our expedition continues with a drive to Darbang. We will have to trek to the Italian Base Camp at 3660m. On the way, wepass by several villages such as Boghara and Muri. Each of these villages has its own unique culture and lifestyle.
The trail also takes trekkers through lush rhododendron and bamboo forests. Trekkers get a picturesque view of Manapathi (6380m), Tsaurabong (6395m), and various peaks of Dhaulagiri from the Italian Base Camp. The journey continues with a trek to the Dhaulagiri Base Camp at 4750m. It is a hard climb the trail filled with moraines, but the view of Tukche Peak (6920m) and the west side of the Dhaulagiri Massif make it worth it.
From the base camp, four camps will be set on the way to the summit. From the summit, trekkers get a surreal view of the surrounding mountains and icefalls. On the way back, trekkers pass through the French Col (5360m) and the Dhampus Pass (5244m), alongside the Kali Gandaki River.
The best seasons to indulge in this adventure are in the months from March to May or from September to December as the weather is favorable. Trekkers require Annapurna Conservation Area permit, a TIMS card, Mt. Dhaulagiri Expedition permit, and a government liaison officer.
