The Makalu Expedition is the perfect way to experience the serene beauty of Mt. Makalu. Standing at the altitude of 8485m in the border of Nepal and China, Mt. Makalu is the fifth highest peak in the world. Known for its stunning deep gorges and waterfalls along with the beautiful Sherpa and Kirat settlements, this region attracts many travelers every year. Although the traffic is nothing close to other popular expedition routes which adds more to its beauty as travelers get to enjoy the adventure in a serene and peaceful environment. Makalu Expedition is one of those adventures you should not miss out on.

Four days from your arrival in Kathmandu, the trip starts with a flight to Tumlingtar. FromTumlingtar, your journey takes flight as you pass through several settlements like Chichila, Num, Sheduwa, Tashigaon, and Kauma. The exotic cuisines and the simple lifestyle of people who live in these villages are sure to open your eyes to a new world.

On the rocky path of Langmale Kharka (4100m) lies the highest settlement in the trekking trail. From here, the actual summit draws near with rest stops at Makalu Base Camp (4870m) and Hillary Base Camp (4800m). The rest of the 34 days are left for the climbing period of Mt. Makalu. After your summit, the route leads you back to Tumlingtar from where you will return to Kathmandu.

The best season, like any other mountain expedition, is during autumn and spring. The days are longer and warmer, with less chance of avalanches. You will be required to pay a royalty fee for the summit. A permit from Nepal government to enter Makalu Barun National Park and to climb Mt. Makalu is needed. A government-approved liaison officer needs to accompany you during the expedition.
