Tsum Valley Trekking offers an exceptional journey into the sacred Himalayan valley, located in the northern Gorkha district of Nepal. Tsum comes from the Tibetan word “Tsombo,” meaning vivid colors. This refers to the colorful geology of the encircling mountains. The distinct geographical area known as “Tsum Valley” is locally called “Tsum Tso Chucksums,” which translates to thirteen provinces governed as a single territory.
The magical valley, surrounded by the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges, offers unforgettable trekking opportunities in Nepal. This spectacular semi-restricted area, which opened to foreigners only in 1992, requires a special permit to explore. For adventurers seeking off-the-beaten-path trails and less crowded destinations, Tsum Valley Trek is becoming increasingly popular. The Sacred Valley lies in the lap of the Boudha Himal, Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Sringi Himal mountain ranges.
This peaceful Mountain valley is rich in traditional ancient art and culture. Hundreds of old mani walls and stupas adorn the area, creating an auspicious atmosphere. Visiting centuries-old monasteries, including Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, Dephu Doma Nunnery Gompa, Lungdeng Gompa, and Milarepa Gompa/Cave, provides great insight into Himalayan Buddhism.
Tsum Valley Trek: An Artistic and Cultural Journey
The Tsum Valley Trek trails are embellished with artistic stupas and lined with stone-carved mani walls. These walls feature thousands of stone slabs etched with drawings of deities and inscribed with prayers. The famous Kyimo Lung pilgrimage circuit is located in central Trans-Himalaya including Tsum Valley, and is a well-known secret place for learning Buddhism and meditation. It is believed that the legendary Buddhist saint Milarepa meditated in the caves of these mountain valleys. Due to its isolated location and challenging terrain, Tsum Valley has remained untouched by modern development for centuries, preserving its unique culture.
The local inhabitants, primarily of Tibetan origin, speak their own dialect and maintain unique cultural practices. They celebrate festivals such as Lhosar, Dhaythang, and Saka Dawa, reflecting their rich traditions.
Tsum Valley Trekking Route
The Tsum Valley Trekking adventure begins in Machakhola, accessible via a 7-8 hour drive by public or private transportation. The trekking trail follows the Budigandaki River valley, passing through Chhetri, Bahun, and Gurung villages with steep, cultivated farmlands. Over the first two days, trekkers traverse deep valleys carved by the Budigandaki River. Upon reaching Jagat or further, the landscape gradually opens up, offering spectacular views of the majestic Himalayas.
From Nyak Phedi, trekkers depart from the main trail that leads to the Manaslu-Larke Pass Trek and instead follow the Siyar River valley, where the true Tsum Valley trek begins. The trail extends to Mu Gompa, one of the most significant monasteries in the region. The return trail is similar, with additional sightseeing opportunities at Rachen Gompa, Lungdeng Gompa, Ganesh Himal Base Camp, and Ripchet.
