Lumbini, a pristine holy land, is renowned as the birthplace of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha. Located in the Rupandehi district of Nepal, Lumbini lies 281 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu, east of Kapilavastu, and southwest of Devadaha. This sacred site holds great significance for Buddhist followers worldwide, attracting thousands of pilgrims annually. It was in this blessed land that Lord Buddha, born as Siddhartha Gautam in the 6th century B.C., took his first breath.
Mayadevi Temple and Sacred Garden
At the heart of Lumbini is the revered Mayadevi Temple, dedicated to the mother of Shakyamuni Buddha. This sacred site is home to the marker stone that pinpoints the exact birthplace of Lord Buddha. Within a Sacred Garden, adjacent to the Mayadevi Temple, the holy pond Pushkarni is located where Queen Maya Devi is believed to have bathed before giving birth to Siddhartha Gautam, and it is believed that Lord Buddha also bathed here. The temple complex also features the Ashoka Pillar, erected by Emperor Ashoka in 245 B.C., further underscoring Lumbini’s historical and religious importance.
Within the Lumbini Sacred Garden, numerous temples and monasteries have been built by Buddhist communities from around the world, adding to the spiritual ambiance of this holy site.
Explore Tilaurakot: The Ancient Capital of Kapilvastu
Beyond the Lumbini Garden, Tilaurakot holds great significance as the ancient capital of the Kapilvastu Kingdom. This site was the palace of King Suddhodhan, the father of Shakyamuni Buddha, where Prince Siddhartha Gautam spent the first 29 years of his life. Visitors can explore the remnants of the palace, including the eastern gate, known as Mahabhiniskramana Dwara, through which Prince Siddhartha departed to seek supreme enlightenment.
