The extraordinary Bhaktapur Durbar Square, with its celebrated Golden Gate and the embellished Palace of Fifty-Five Windows, reflects the glory days of the Malla Dynasty. The city dates back to the medieval period when art and architecture thrived in the three cities of the Kathmandu Valley. Situated 14 kilometers east of Kathmandu, this ancient city is also famous for pottery and woodcarving, as amply displayed on the squares and adorning the windows, respectively.
