A Hidden Gem in Solukhumbu
For those seeking adventure in less crowded areas, Pikey Dudh Kunda Trekking in the lower Solukhumbu region of Nepal is an excellent option. This trek is divided into two distinct areas, offering a unique experience with breathtaking views of the majestic Himalayan ranges. Unlike other popular trekking destinations, this route remains untouched by commercialization, making it ideal for those who prefer a peaceful and authentic trekking experience. The Pikey Peak Dudh Kunda Trek follows ancient trading routes and provides a fascinating insight into the diverse ethnic communities residing in the region.
Starting Point – Kathmandu to Dhap
The trek begins in Kathmandu, where you can explore the city’s rich culture before setting off on an exciting overland journey to Dhap. The Pikey Dudh Kunda Trek route follows the traditional path once used by local traders traveling to Jiri and Okhaldhunga before modern road networks were established. Along the way, trekkers pass the beautiful Jhapre Gumpa (Monastery), perched on a hilltop at 2,820m above sea level. From there, the trail continues northeast to Pikey Base Camp via Lhamje Danda.
Pikey Peak Summit – A Panoramic Himalayan Viewpoint
The following day, trekkers ascend to the summit of Pikey Peak (4,040m), a vantage point that offers spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gaurishankar, Numbur Himal, Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga ranges. From Pikey Peak, the trail leads eastward towards Junbesi, a charming Sherpa village and the valley known for its well-organized settlements, traditional Buddhist stupas, terraced farmlands, pine forests, and Mani walls. The breathtaking scenery of Junbesi Valley makes it a highlight of the trek.
Journey to the Sacred Dudh Kunda Lake
The Dudh Kunda Lake trek continues via the Thupten Chholing Buddhist Monastery, a spiritual haven home to over 800 nuns and lamas. Established in 1960 by the late His Holiness Kabje Thrulshik Rinpoche, this monastery is a major religious center in Solukhumbu. The trek further leads to a series of pristine holy lakes, including Dudh Kunda (4,190m), a sacred milky-white lake nestled amid a spectacular mountainous landscape that captivates every visitor.
Breathtaking Mountain Views Along the Trail
Throughout the trek, trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of the world’s highest peaks, including Mt. Everest (8,848m), Makalu (8,475m), Kanchenjunga (8,598m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), Lhotse (8,414m), Thamserku (6,608m), Numbur (6,656m), Khatang (6,853m), Karilung (6,511m), Gauri Sankar (7,181m), Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Manaslu (8,163m), and Annapurna (8,091m).
